Canada’s top performance on the track on the third day of the world championships was an eighth-place finish by Matt Hughes in the men’s 3,000m steeplechase. Hughes finished in 8:18.16, being outkicked in the final two laps by eventual winners. He recently won the event at the Pan Am Games in Toronto. The top spot was taken by Kenya’s Ezekiel Kemboi who has been one of the most dominant athletes in any discipline in recent years. Kemboi led a Kenyan sweep of the top four spots, running 8:11.28 and securing his fourth world championship gold. He’s undefeated in major global championships since 2009. In the women’s 10,000m Lanni Marchant and Natasha Wodak finished 18th and 23rd, running 32:22.50 and 32:59.20. The race was won by Kenya’s Vivian Cheruiyot. Canada brought home it’s first gold medal from the IAAF World Championships when Shawn Barber won the pole vault. The medal is Canada’s first gold at the world track and field championships since 2003 when Perdita Felicien won the 100m hurdles. Felicien is in Beijing covering the championships for CBC. The other track final saw Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce of Jamaica win the women’s 100m in 10.76, her third world championship gold over the distance.
